                     HOUSE  CONCURRENT
                        RESOLUTION

  URGING THE HAWAII STATE LEGISLATURE TO COMMEMORATE "2000, THE
    YEAR OF THE ALOHA SHIRT" BY ALLOWING LEGISLATORS TO WEAR
    ALOHA ATTIRE FOR FLOOR SESSIONS.



 1        WHEREAS, except for Aloha Fridays, the Legislature has
 2   required its members to wear business attire during floor
 3   sessions - jackets and ties for men, and appropriate apparel
 4   for women; and
 5   
 6        WHEREAS, the reality of business attire in Hawaii is just
 7   the opposite - jackets and ties is the exception to the more
 8   familiar Aloha shirts; and
 9   
10        WHEREAS, the demand for Aloha attire has exploded on the
11   mainland and the rest of the world as the Aloha shirt and
12   muumuu have become more commonplace and accepted as proper
13   attire; and
14   
15        WHEREAS, annually, tens of thousands of tourists from all
16   over the world witness the legislature in session and would be
17   greatly influenced by the attire of the legislators; and
18   
19        WHEREAS, by allowing the legislators to wear Aloha attire
20   on a daily basis, it would not only support the State's
21   thriving garment industry by featuring locally made products,
22   but it would also coincide with the commemoration of "2000, The
23   Year of the Aloha Shirt"; now, therefore,
24   
25        BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the
26   Twentieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session
27   of 2000, the Senate concurring, that the Legislature is urged
28   to allow its members to wear Aloha attire for the rest of the
29   2000 session on a daily basis, to recognize and commemorate
30   "2000, The Year of the Aloha Shirt" and to support the garment
31   industry; and

 1        BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this
 2   Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the President of the
 3   Senate, the Speaker of the House, and to every legislator and
 4   staff office.
