                     HOUSE CONCURRENT
                        RESOLUTION
REQUESTING THE SUPPORT OF THE STATE AND COUNTY ADMINISTRATIONS TO
   IMPLEMENT EVENTS PLANNED BY THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY
   COMMEMORATION OF THE KOREAN WAR COMMISSION AND HONORING THE
   50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE KOREAN WAR.


 1      WHEREAS, in the early morning hours of June 25, 1950, the
 2   communist government of North Korea launched an attack into
 3   South Korea; and
 4   
 5      WHEREAS, determined to support the world's democracies, the
 6   United States immediately led a United Nations force into the
 7   Korean War; and
 8   
 9      WHEREAS, what was envisioned as a short, decisive repelling
10   of the enemy became a prolonged and frustrating fight that
11   threatened to explode beyond Korean borders; and
12   
13      WHEREAS, the fighting lasted for three years until an uneasy
14   peace returned to the region with a negotiated settlement that
15   re-established the earlier boundary between North and South
16   Korea; and
17   
18      WHEREAS, one-and-a-half million American men and women, a
19   cross-section of the nation's population, struggled side-by-
20   side during the conflict, and served as soldiers, chaplains,
21   nurses, clerks, and in a host of other combat and support
22   roles; and
23   
24      WHEREAS, one hundred thirty-one individuals were awarded the
25   Medal of Honor, the nation's highest commendation for combat
26   bravery, and of the recipients, ninety-four had given their
27   lives in heroic acts that earned them the honor; and
28   
29      WHEREAS, Korean War veterans and their families should be
30   identified, thanked, and properly recognized and honored; and 
31   
32      WHEREAS, to honor the men and women who served in Korea for
33   their struggles and sacrifices under trying circumstances in

 1   service to their country and the cause of freedom, the Governor
 2   established the 50th Anniversary Commemoration of the Korean
 3   War Commission; and
 4   
 5       WHEREAS, the purpose of the 50th Anniversary Commemoration
 6   of the Korean War Commission is to identify, thank, and honor
 7   the veterans of the Korean War, their families, and especially
 8   those who lost loved ones; now, therefore,
 9   
10       BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the
11   Twentieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session
12   of 2000, the Senate concurring, that this body, the Governor,
13   the State Department of Defense, the Office of Veterans'
14   Services, and the Counties are requested to support, fund, and
15   will help to implement the events planned by the 50th
16   Anniversary Commemoration of the Korean War Commission; and
17   
18       BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this
19   Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Governor, the State
20   Adjutant General, the Mayors of the Counties, and the
21   Commissioners of the 50th Anniversary Commemoration Of The
22   Korean War Commission.
