                     HOUSE RESOLUTION
CONGRATULATING SAINT FRANCIS SCHOOLS ON ITS SEVENTY-FIFTH
   ANNIVERSARY


 1       WHEREAS, the Sisters of the Third Franciscan Order,
 2   Syracuse, New York, responding to the request of the Hawaiian
 3   Government, came to Hawaii in 1883 to accept the sacrifice of
 4   expending themselves in care and service of the unfortunate
 5   victims of leprosy; and
 6   
 7       WHEREAS, the Sisters were also asked to establish schools
 8   to provide youth of diverse ethnic, religious, and
 9   socioeconomic backgrounds with a quality Catholic education and
10   to mentor them academically, spiritually, physically,
11   emotionally, and socially through a liberal arts education
12   within a Christian atmosphere; and
13   
14       WHEREAS, Saint Francis Convent School was licensed by the
15   Territory of Hawaii on September 14, 1924, becoming the first
16   Hawaii high school program available not only to young women
17   who wanted to become religious sisters, but also to any young
18   woman who wanted a four-year diploma; and
19   
20       WHEREAS, in anticipation of a larger enrollment, eleven
21   acres of land were purchased in Manoa Valley, enabling the
22   Sisters and students of Saint Francis Convent School to
23   relocate to the current Manoa Valley facility; and
24   
25       WHEREAS, in testament to the quality of its educational
26   offerings, the student body of Saint Francis Schools has grown
27   from its initial enrollment of ten students in 1924 to more
28   than 480 students on its Manoa and Kauai campuses today; now,
29   therefore,

31       BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the
32   Twentieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session
33   of 1999, that this body recognizes and congratulates Saint
34   Francis Schools as it celebrates its Seventy-fifth year of
35   educational services to the people of Hawaii and the world,
36   commends the Saint Francis Schools communities as they prepare
37   students to become "informed, responsible, active, and
38   contributing members of the church and of the global
39   community," and extends to all of them its warmest aloha and
40   best wishes for continued success.
