                     HOUSE  RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING LAVERNE FERNANDES MOORE AND TERESA A. DIAZ,
   RECIPIENTS OF THE 1999 FRIEND OF ADULT EDUCATION AWARD. 


 1       WHEREAS, the success of adult education is dependant upon
 2   dedicated volunteers who serve as tutors, mentors, and members
 3   of school, district, and state advisory councils and
 4   committees; and
 5   
 6       WHEREAS, LAVERNE FERNANDES MOORE and TERESA A. DIAZ have
 7   increased the public's understanding and appreciation of adult
 8   education, lobbied for legislation that positively affected the
 9   adult education population, worked actively with the community
10   toward improvement of opportunities for adult learners, and
11   helped schools develop programs that enhanced the education of
12   adult learners; and
13   
14       WHEREAS, LAVERNE FERNANDES MOORE and TERESA A. DIAZ have
15   shown exceptional teamwork and partnership advocating and
16   promoting adult education in the State of Hawaii, created a
17   film honoring the 50th birthday of adult education in Hawaii,
18   was successful at initiating and lobbying to pass Act 12,
19   benefiting the needs of adult learners, maintained that adult
20   education be separate sub-committee within the Board of
21   Education, and achieved in accomplishing other endeavors that
22   focused on enhancing and improving adult education in Hawaii;
23   and
24   
25       WHEREAS, a member of the Board of Directors for the Hawaii
26   Community Education Association, LAVERNE FERNANDES MOORE is
27   Hawaii Head Start Collaboration Director, directed a highly
28   commended experimental project that focused on helping homeless
29   adults obtain their general equivalency diploma, created,
30   implemented, and evaluated Hawaii's first non-English early
31   speaking childhood literacy family program at the McKinley
32   Community School for Adults and the Royal Elementary and Harris
33   Head Start programs, and continues to speak to schools and
34   organizations on behalf of adult education; and

 1       WHEREAS, TERESA A. DIAZ, a member of the Board of Directors
 2   for the Hawaii Adult Education Association, served as an
 3   instructor at Waipahu Community School for Adults for more than
 4   twenty years and has assisted new teachers through her training
 5   in the Competency Based High School Diploma program; now,
 6   therefore,
 7   
 8       BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the
 9   Twentieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session
10   of 1999, that this body hereby congratulates LAVERNE FERNANDES
11   MOORE and TERESA A. DIAZ, recipients of the 1999 Friend of
12   Adult Education Award, and extends to them its warmest aloha
13   and best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
