                     HOUSE  RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING AND RECOGNIZING THE IOLANI SCHOOL VARSITY GIRLS'
   SOCCER AND SOFTBALL TEAMS AS WINNERS OF THE 1999 HAWAII
   STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS.



 1          WHEREAS, team sports that are offered through the
 2   athletic departments of Hawaii's schools prepare students with
 3   numerous challenging and rewarding opportunities by enabling
 4   them to apply physical and mental skills in athletic
 5   competition; and
 6   
 7          WHEREAS, Iolani School was founded in 1863 as a private
 8   college preparatory school for young men and recognizing the
 9   important role of women in our society, began accepting young
10   women as part of its student body by 1979, and whose students
11   are expected to demonstrate high scholastic standing, while
12   also recognizing the importance of athletic competition in
13   developing good sportsmanship, discipline, and conditioning;
14   and
15   
16          WHEREAS, both the 1998-99 IOLANI RAIDERS VARSITY GIRLS'
17   SOCCER TEAM and 1998-99 IOLANI RAIDERS VARSITY GIRLS' SOFTBALL
18   TEAM embodied these fine qualities and have each demonstrated
19   the team's ability to succeed and excel by successfully
20   achieving the overall season records consisting of 13-2 for the
21   soccer team and 17-2 for the softball team, resulting in both
22   teams winning the Interscholastic League Championships; and
23   
24          WHEREAS, on February 13, 1999, having battled its way
25   through the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Girls State
26   Championship tournament into the final game against Kamehameha,
27   the IOLANI RAIDERS VARSITY GIRLS' SOCCER TEAM demonstrated
28   perseverance against the Warriors, ended in a scoreless tie
29   during regulation play, and succeeded in its triumph with a
30   goal in the second overtime period winning by a score of 1-0 as
31   the new State champions, and was proudly ranked as one of the
32   top ten teams in the country by the National Soccer Coaches
33   Association of America; and

 1          WHEREAS, on the following day,the IOLANI GIRLS' VARSITY
 2   SOFTBALL TEAM stirred up equal cause for excitement by earning
 3   a title place in the Hawaii High School Association Girls'
 4   Championship game, having trounced 9-time State champion,
 5   Kailua School in a 6-0 semi-final game, confronted ILH rival,
 6   Punahou, and undeniably defeated the buff-n-blue with a
 7   convincing score of 10-1, thus, achieved the first softball
 8   State championship in the history of Iolani School; and
 9   
10          WHEREAS, the Legislature welcomes the opportunity to
11   acknowledge and encourage the athletic accomplishments of the
12   IOLANI GIRLS' VARSITY SOCCER TEAM members:  KRISTIN MASUNAGA,
13   MARIAH FARLEY, LAURAN DIGNAM, KATE SAARI, KARA ISHIKAWA, GAELAN
14   GRAY, ALISA SATO, JAMIE SHOMA, MAYA SAKAMAKI, CHELSEA AKIMOTO,
15   MARCIE OKUMURA, EMI TANITOMI, LARA KARAMATSU, JAMIE SHIBATA,
16   SHARI NISHIKAWA, JODIE TANGA, JONI KAITOKU, TIFFANY TODO, MOMI
17   MARKUS, ELYSSA STREET, and HEATHER MOTONAGA, their coaches
18   George-Anne Derby, Kari Morioka, and Michelle Toyama; and
19   student managers Melissa Street and Erin Young; and the IOLANI
20   GIRLS' VARSITY SOFTBALL TEAM members:  SAORI TAKAHASHI, LIANE
21   TOMINAGA, ERIN KAMIKAWA, SHARILYN SHIRAMIZU, MITZI ING, CINDY
22   HIGA, KACY NEKOBA, LISA IWAMOTO, AUREA ASTRO, KIMBERLEE ARITA,
23   KELLY GOYA, LORI ANN HAMANO, NOELLE IZUMI, TARYN NAGATA,
24   THERESIA OHTA, AMY TANIGUCHI, LAURI EIKO TITCOMB, SALINE SAMIA,
25   and IANETA LEI, their coaches Chris Shimabukuro, Clem Hew, Dean
26   Sato, and Stacy Hiramoto; and student managers Nina Richardson
27   and Sara Inouye; and to Iolani Headmaster Val Iwashita and
28   Athletic Director Carl Schroers; now, therefore,
29   
30          BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the
31   Twentieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session
32   of 1999, that this body hereby applauds the 1998-99 IOLANI
33   RAIDERS VARSITY GIRLS' SOCCER TEAM and the 1998-99 IOLANI
34   RAIDERS VARSITY GIRLS' SOFTBALL TEAM, their coaches, athletic
35   staff, and to all who have contributed to their outstanding
36   season, congratulates them on their athletic achievement as the
37   1999 Hawaii State Champions, and extends to all of them its
38   warmest aloha best wishes for continued success in all future
39   endeavors.
