                     HOUSE  RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII BAND ON ITS SEVENTY-FIFTH
ANNIVERSARY.



 1       WHEREAS, the UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII BAND was formed in 1923
 2   as an eighteen-member drum and bugle corps which practiced in
 3   the bleachers of the swimming pool and played for football
 4   games, pep rallies, and concerts; and
 5   
 6       WHEREAS, the UH BAND performed for a football game on
 7   Saturday, December 6, 1941, just before the attack on Pearl
 8   Harbor, and many of the students who used school-owned
 9   instruments took them home with them to keep until after the
10   War when in 1946, Norman Rian revived the music program; and 
11   
12       WHEREAS, in 1967, Richard Lum created the modern UH
13   Marching Band to perform at halftime shows at football games;
14   and
15   
16       WHEREAS, today, under the guidance of Director of Bands
17   Grant Okamura, the University of Hawaii Band Program boasts
18   over 350 student members playing in three concert bands, six
19   pep bands, one jazz band, and the Rainbow Marching Band; and
20   
21       WHEREAS, the concert bands continue to fulfill their
22   commitment to encouraging new band works by providing for
23   premiere performances by Hawaii composers, and the UH Band
24   staff has given Hawaii's most talented high school marching
25   band students an opportunity to perform with a select group at
26   a nationally televised bowl game by directing the Hula Bowl
27   All-Star Band since 1972; and
28   
29       WHEREAS, eighty-five to ninety per cent of UH Band students
30   are not music majors, ninety-nine per cent are residents of
31   Hawaii and products of Hawaii high school band programs, and
32   all UH Band students sacrifice enormous amounts of time and
33   energy in service to the University; now, therefore,

 1       BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the
 2   Twentieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session
 3   of 1999, that this body hereby commends and congratulates the
 4   UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII BAND on the occasion of its Seventy-Fifth
 5   Anniversary, and extends its warmest aloha and best wishes for
 6   continued success in all future endeavors.
