                     HOUSE  RESOLUTION

RECOGNIZING PRINCE JONAH  KUHIO  ELEMENTARY  SCHOOL  AS THE FIRST
   SCHOOL AT WHICH  A  SERIES  OF  SCULPTURES WILL BE COMPLETED
   THROUGH A  COLLABORATION  BETWEEN  THE  STATE  FOUNDATION ON
   CULTURE AND THE ARTS AND THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION.



 1       WHEREAS,  the  sculpture   entitled   Ka  Mo'o'ili'ili  was
 2   dedicated  on  December  18,   1998,   at  PRINCE  JONAH  KUHIO
 3   ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, the first school  in  the State of Hawaii to
 4   complete an art piece  commissioned  through  the Art in Public
 5   Places,  Artists  in  Residency   Program,  which  requires  an
 6   education component and  close  collaboration among the school,
 7   the  Department  of  Education,  and  the  State  Foundation on
 8   Culture and the Arts; and
 9   
10       WHEREAS,  the  process  of  creating  the  Ka  Mo'o'ili'ili
11   sculpture  was  aligned  with  PRINCE  JONAH  KUHIO  ELEMENTARY
12   SCHOOL's  total  curriculum,  which  strives  to  integrate the
13   Theory  of  Multiple   Intelligences   into  exciting  learning
14   experiences for  its  students  that  continue  on  through its
15   interactive design; and
16   
17       WHEREAS, Kazu "Mr.  Ichi"  Fukuda,  the artist who inspired
18   the Ka Mo'o'ili'ili sculpture,  taught students of PRINCE KUHIO
19   ELEMENTARY SCHOOL about  building  a  sculpture, and created an
20   interactive sculpture from which students  can read on the tail
21   of the mo'o; and
22   
23       WHEREAS, the Ka Mo'o'ili'ili  sculpture could not have been
24   completed  without  the  support  of  the  State  Foundation on
25   Culture  and  the  Arts,  whose   mission  is  to  enhance  the
26   environmental quality of public buildings and spaces throughout
27   the state for the enjoyment and enrichment of the public and to
28   acquire,  interpret,  preserve,   and   display  works  of  art
29   expressive of the Hawaiian Islands, the multicultural heritages
30   of its people, and the creative interests of its artists; and
31   
32       WHEREAS, the Ka Mo'o'ili'ili  sculpture could not have been
33   completed without the support  of  the Department of Education,
34   one  of  whose  objectives  is  to  provide  opportunities  for
35   students  to  work  directly  with  professional  artists under
36   commission  to  create  a  site  specific  work  of  art;  now,

 1       BE IT  RESOLVED  by  the  House  of  Representatives of the
 2   Twentieth Legislature of the  State  of Hawaii, Regular Session
 3   of 1999, that this  body  hereby  recognizes PRINCE JONAH KUHIO
 4   ELEMENTARY SCHOOL as  the  first  school  at  which a series of
 5   sculptures will be  completed  through  a collaboration between
 6   the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and the Department
 7   of Education.
