                     HOUSE RESOLUTION
REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO PROVIDE UP-TO-
THE-MINUTE INFORMATION ON TRAFFIC AND ROAD CONDITIONS
    THROUGHOUT THE STATE.

WHEREAS, motorists often face delays in reaching their
destinations because of unexpected accidents or other road
conditions which impede movement of vehicles; and

WHEREAS, if motorists were apprised of delaying
conditions, they might be able to take alternative routes to
their destinations, alleviating the congestion; and

WHEREAS, an all-traffic radio station would provide a
constant resource for motorists seeking the quickest route
  between two points; and

WHEREAS, a traffic hotline would also provide an
opportunity for motorists to phone in and find out about any
traffic alerts regarding planned closures, construction, and
temporary delays due to accidents or other events; and

WHEREAS, the Department of Transportation has started to
employ information disseminating tools on certain highways on
Oahu, and the State as a whole would benefit from a more
  expansive approach to the deployment of traffic information;
  now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the
Twentieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session
of 1999, that the Department of Transportation is requested to
study the feasibility of establishing an all-traffic radio
station and traffic hotline to provide up-to-the-minute traffic
  information throughout the State; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of
Transportation is requested to submit its findings and
recommendations to the Legislature not less than twenty days
before the convening of the 2000 Regular Session; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this
Resolution be transmitted to the Director of Transportation.
