                     HOUSE CONCURRENT
                        RESOLUTION


REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF LAND AND NATURAL RESOURCES TO STUDY
   THE IMPACT OF ESTABLISHING A SHORELINE FISHERY MANAGEMENT
   AREA AT HANAPEPE, KAUAI.
 



 1       WHEREAS, the State's constitution stipulates that Hawaii's
 2   natural beauty and all natural resources shall be conserved and
 3   protected for the benefit of present and future generations;
 4   and
 5   
 6       WHEREAS, the coastline and accompanying coral reefs
 7   adjacent to the Hanapepe Salt Pond are considered natural
 8   resources and home to a myriad of marine life; and
 9   
10       WHEREAS, community involvement in conservation and
11   preservation efforts is essential to the acceptance and
12   ultimate success of such a project; and
13   
14       WHEREAS, the Legislature finds that further community input
15   in cooperation with the Department of Land and Natural
16   Resources and other interested parties will be needed to
17   finalize the scope of any future designated management area on
18   Kauai; now, therefore,
19   
20       BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the
21   Twentieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session
22   of 1999, the Senate concurring, that the Department of Land and
23   Natural Resources is requested to study the impact of
24   establishing a shoreline fishery management area in the
25   vicinity of Hanapepe Salt Pond and Burns Field, with particular
26   emphasis on Kuunakaiole; and
27   
28       BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Land and
29   Natural Resources submit a report to the Legislature of its
30   findings not less than twenty days prior to the convening of
31   the Regular Session of 2000; and

 1       BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this
 2   Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the
 3   Board of Land and Natural Resources.
