                   A BILL FOR AN ACT

RELATING TO THE HAWAII TEACHER STANDARDS BOARD.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The legislature finds that staggering the terms

of the members of boards and commissions results in more

consistency and stability. The Hawaii teacher standards board

consists of nine members, seven of whom are appointed by the

governor, and two of whom are ex officio members. The seven

appointed members currently serve terms that are congruent, and

their terms all end in 2001.

The purpose of this Act is to provide for the staggering of

the terms of the members of the Hawaii teacher standards board

beginning in 2001.

SECTION 2. Section 302A-801, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is

amended by amending subsection (c) to read as follows:

"(c) Appointed board members shall serve three-year

terms[.], except that the governor may reduce the terms of those

appointed in 2001 to provide, as nearly as possible, for the

expiration of an equal number of terms at intervals of one year."

SECTION 3. Statutory material to be repealed is bracketed.

New statutory material is underscored.
