                   A  BILL  FOR  AN  ACT

RELATING TO TEACHERS.



BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 1      SECTION 1.  The quality of education provided by any school
 
 2 system is greatly impacted by the quality of its teachers, which
 
 3 in turn, is impacted by the pool of people who are interested in
 
 4 pursuing teaching as a career.  The purpose of this Act is to
 
 5 appropriate funds for a promotional effort to attract more people
 
 6 to the teaching profession.  These funds shall be used to develop
 
 7 and disseminate public service announcements to young people with
 
 8 little or no work experience, as well as those with substantial
 
 9 work experience, to inform them of the benefits of a teaching
 
10 career.
 
11      SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general
 
12 revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $      or so much
 
13 thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 1999-2000 and the sum
 
14 of $      or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year
 
15 2000-2001 to promote teaching as a career; provided that no funds
 
16 shall be made available under this Act unless matched on a
 
17 dollar-for-dollar basis by private contributions, including in-
 
18 kind contributions.
 
19      SECTION 3.  The sums appropriated shall be expended by the
 
20 University of Hawaii for the purposes of this Act.

 1      SECTION 4.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 1999.
