The purpose of this informational briefing is to receive testimony from invited family caregivers, defined in Act 285 as persons who provide unpaid, informal assistance to persons sixty and older with physical or cognitive disabilities. Testifiers have been selected to represent the various types of caregivers, and they will share their caregiving experience with the Committee.

The types of unpaid, volunteer caregivers will include:  caregivers who are employed; caregivers taking care of someone at the end of life; caregivers taking care of someone with Alzheimer's Disease; caregivers taking care of multiple people (i.e. child and parent, parent and in-law, etc); caregivers who do not live with the care recipient; older adult caregivers taking care of an older adult (i.e. spouse taking care of a spouse); and long-distance caregivers. A facilitator of a family caregiver support group will also share his or her perspective with the Committee.

The Committee will also discuss the work plan and agendas of future meetings scheduled for November 17 at 9:00 a.m., December 12 at 10:00 a.m., and January 5 at 1:30 p.m. All meetings will be held in conference room 225.

Pursuant to Act 285, the purpose of the Joint Legislative Committee on Family Caregiving is to develop a comprehensive public policy program to strengthen support for family caregivers who provide unpaid, informal assistance to persons sixty and older with physical or cognitive disabilities. The joint legislative committee will consider providing support in categories including but not limited to: coordinated services and policies; training and education; respite services; financial incentives; and balancing work and caregiving.

Other persons who wish to submit testimony, particularly on family caregiving experiences not represented by the invited testifiers noted above, are asked to contact the committee clerk at 586-6250. All testifiers are requested to submit 45 copies of their testimony at least 24 hours before the briefing in room 217 at the State Capitol, or by fax to 586-6251. If you require special assistance or auxiliary aids or services to participate in the meeting (i.e., sign language interpreter, wheelchair accessibility, or parking designated for the disabled) please contact the committee clerk 24 hours prior to the hearing so arrangements can be made.
